In early 2023, Ayrshire Film Co.worked with staff and young people at Lockhart Campus, an Additional Support Needs school in Stevenston, to support them in learning skills in film and animation and ultimately create their very own animated film.
The project, funded by Screen Scotland and entitled 'Lockhart on Film', saw the team – Taylor McInroy and Becca Lewis – initially deliver training to staff, using familiar equipment such as smartphones and iPads. The training also gave Taylor and Becca an opportunity to get direct feedback on their planned project activities, particularly in relation to the issues facing young people with additional support needs.
Over eight sessions the young people explored various types of animation including collage, stop-motion and roto-scoping, as well as creating their own characters and settings. Collectively they created a short film with a greater meaning about 'what makes me unique' to tie all the characters together. Finally, narration and sound effects were added, as well as some video editing to complete the film.
Lockhart on Film was a great success, with one pupil saying “It was really fun, I liked making my character move in all different directions” and a staff member asking for “more of the same, please - was a great session just not long enough!”.

The Screen Education Fund, formally the Film Education Partnership Fund, has been designed to develop increased capabilities in screen education and supports programmes of work with the potential to achieve these outcomes.
