Entertaining, jaw-dropping and hilarious, My Old School tells the outrageous true story of Scotland’s Great Pretender, Brandon Lee.
Brandon Lee enrolled at Glasgow's Bearsden Academy in 1993 as a sixteen year old exchange student. However, it wasn't until a year later that Brandon's true shocking identity was revealed to the surprise of his teachers and classmates alike.
Directed by Jono McLeod, this hybrid documentary, supported by Screen Scotland, features a combination of live-action performances, audio recordings and animated segments, the later of which were made by Stirling-based animation company, Wild Child Animation.
A-list star Alan Cumming leads the cast, lip-syncing to audio recordings of the real Brandon Lee who did not want to show his face in the documentary. Animated sequences are used within the film to depict the stories of those who didn't want to participate. A variety of Scottish talent voice the animated characters, including Scottish singing legend, Lulu.
We spoke to Jono, Alan and Lulu ahead of My Old School's European Premiere at Glasgow Film Festival 2022 all about the making of the documentary, the hybrid elements used within the film and why it was important to use a variety of incredible Scottish talent to tell this story. My Old School accessed £95,000 through the Film Development and Production Fund to support this ambitious hybrid documentary. The film created significant opportunities for Scottish talent and Scottish independent production company Hopscotch Films.
