Screen Fringe returns for 2023

Registration is now open for Screen Fringe: the service provided by Screen Scotland in partnership with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, to connect creative executives, talent agents and producers from the film and TV sector with writing, directing and performing talent at the internationally renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

With a focus on helping unearth talent and stories that can transition from stage to film or TV, Screen Fringe provides delegates with access to industry networking, social events, 1-2-1 programme navigation, show curation, talent introductions, ticketing support and general advice.

The Screen Fringe Programme Producer and Coordinator will be available before and during August to help delegates make the most of Fringe opportunities, with the objective of maximising stage-to-screen potential.

Screen Fringe takes inspiration from the journeys of comedy writer / performers who have burnished their reputation at Fringe and the moved into successful TV and film work - from Fringe icon Phoebe Waller-Bridge, to Scotland’s own Richard Gadd, whose acclaimed Fringe show Baby Reindeer is due to premiere on Netflix later this year.

Isabel Davis, Executive Director at Screen Scotland said: “Edinburgh in August is a must for anyone in the film or TV business looking for new material and talent. Great stories and ideas can come in many forms, and we aim to help participants find them.

“Screen Scotland treasures its partnership with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and looks forward to sparking ever more talent connections and cross-artform inspiration coming through this summer.”

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an unparalleled showcase of new talent in theatre, comedy and multi-art performance, and a global meeting place for creatives. Every year it attracts 1,400 industry professionals and new voices are discovered, with the potential for crossover into film and TV well documented.

Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer at Edinburgh Festival Fringe said: "As a valued strand of work, I'm delighted that Screen Fringe is returning to the festival this year, as it continues to develop following its launch back in 2019.

“For delegates participating this August, it's where raw talent is spotted, new opportunities are created, and important creative relationships are made. For many artists, Screen Fringe allows them to explore the option of adapting their work for film and TV, and this partnership aims to support those who are looking to take that exciting step."

Writer and producer Michael O’Neill has been appointed as Screen Fringe Programme Producer to lead the programme for 2023. His play THIS IS PARADISE was presented at Traverse Theatre for Fringe and won the Popcorn Writing Award in 2021. He is a BBC Writersroom Scottish Voices alumni, the 2019 recipient of the Bruntwood Prize Original New Voice award, and has been commissioned by theatre and TV companies including National Theatre of Scotland, Almeida Theatre, Element Pictures and House Productions.

Screen Fringe Programme Producer, Michael O’Neill said: “The cultural programmes that Edinburgh plays host to every August are a true marvel. Thousands of shows over hundreds of hours and the unassailable truth that within that, no matter how short your stay will be, you are guaranteed to see work on these stages that you will not want to leave behind. I am beyond delighted to be working with the dedicated team at Screen Fringe to make sure 2023’s most exciting artists don’t get missed, and every conversation that could help a story make the leap from stage to screen will happen before the month is out.”
