Synopsis
This exciting historical drama is directed by Josie Rourke and stars Saoirse Ronan as Mary Queen of Scots and Margot Robbie as her distant cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. The film follows the 1569 conflict between their two countries, focusing on the challenging relationship between the two women.
Queen of France at the age of 16 and widowed at 18, Mary Stuart rejects the expectations for her to remarry and returns to Scotland to claim her rightful throne, but Scotland and England fall under the rule of the defiant Elizabeth I. Betrayal, rebellion and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.
Filming for Mary Queen of Scots took place in several locations across Scotland, including Edinburgh, East Lothian, Glencoe in the Highland and Strathdon in Aberdeenshire.
Produced by Focus Features, Working Title Films, Perfect World Pictures and distributed by Universal Pictures, Mary Queen of Scots will be released in the UK on 18 January 2019.
